About Dental Bridges

A bridge is one option you have when deciding how to replace a missing tooth or teeth with non-removable restorations.  The replacement of missing teeth is necessary to maintain proper oral functions, such as the way you eat and speak, to retain your normal facial appearance and smile, and can affect the position and alignment of other teeth.

A dental bridge attaches the replacement tooth or teeth (bridge pontic) to the natural teeth (bridge abutment) on either side of the gap.  This bridge acts as your new teeth, closing the space and restoring your smile. Our bridges are constructed with a gold alloy (metal) or zirconia (tooth colored) inner framework that has porcelain fused to it to ensure that the bridge looks and functions as naturally as possible.

What To Expect

The procedure generally takes two or three visits and begins with local anesthesia and preparation of the supporting teeth, or abutments.  We then make a very accurate impression of the area that is sent to our dental lab, where the restoration will be fabricated.  While the restoration is being fabricated, we place a temporary that resembles your natural teeth.

At your second visit to the office, we will try in the framework of your final restoration to verify fit and ensure that the teeth are properly aligned.  If everything is correct, we will complete the bridge. If not, the temporary bridge is replaced, and on the third appointment the completed bridge will be fitted into your mouth.  The last step is to cement the bridge into your mouth, delivering your beautifully restored smile.

Dental bridges are highly durable and will last many years; however, they may need to be replaced or re-cemented due to normal wear. We will provide you with care instructions at the conclusion of the procedure.  As with your natural teeth, and any dental restoration, proper brushing, flossing and regular dental visits can aid in maintaining your new permanent bridge.
